A new report out from the CDC estimates that about one in every 25 hospital patients contracts an infection during a stay at the facility, reports USA Today.
The report, published in the March 26 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, estimates that about 648,000 patients contract an infection in the hospital, and that about 11% of them die as a result, according to the paper.
The paper also reported that the CDC survey was conducted in 183 hospitals in 10 states in 2011. The numbers update a previous estimate of 1.7 million infections per year, and previous published reports have estimated the number of hospital infections around one in four patients. That estimate, issued in 2007, was based on different study methods, so the numbers can't be directly compared, the paper said.
