ECRI's top 10 technology hazards have significant patient safety implications

As healthcare progresses through the digital age, health technology and patient safety are intersecting more frequently and with potentially greater impacts. For hospitals, identifying those intersections can be important for both the functionality of health technology systems and for improving quality of care for patients.


In November, the ECRI Institute released its annual “Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2015,” and many of the hazards on the list point to serious patient safety implications. For example, for the fourth year in a row, ECRI has put alarm hazards in the top spot, and also added ventilator alarm hazards at number five, indicating that alarms remain a concern from both a patient safety and technology standpoint.
