ISMP issues new guidelines for adult IV push medications

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) released new guidelines for adult IV push medications that will help healthcare providers identify associated risks using the medications.


The guidelines discuss the risks with IV push therapy and recommendations for the following areas:

  • Acquisition and distribution
  • Aseptic technique
  • Clinician preparation
  • Labeling
  • Clinician administration
  • Drug information resources
  • Competency assessment
  • Error reporting
  • Future inquiry

Additionally, the guidelines call on manufacturers to provide IV products in the most ready-to-administer form possible, and design devices and technology that promote safe IV push drug administration.
