A patient death at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland, CA, that has been connected with a medication administration error occurred during a nursing strike.

The California Nurses Association says hospital administrators locked out staff nurses from returning to work on Friday after a one-day strike by 23,000 nurses from Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and two other area hospitals on Thursday. During a strike, replacement nurses are required to have a five-day contract to fill for striking nurses, causing a “lock out” of regularly employed nurses after a strike.

A replacement nurse allegedly inserted a nutritional supplement into a catheter meant for delivering medicine to the bloodstream.
