NPSF report homes in on the importance of transparency in healthcare

You’ve heard it before: Transparency is crucial to patient safety. Although quality experts will nod their heads in agreement, they are likely thinking: Easier said than done.

A new report addresses those fears head on and provides in-depth recommendations for transforming healthcare institutions into transparent organizations in the name of quality improvement. The report entitled Shining a Light: Safer Health Care Through Transparency and published in January by the National Patient Safety foundation’s (NPSF) Lucian Leape Institute, acknowledges that transparency is difficult, awkward, and rife with cultural obstacles, but experts agree the benefits equate to a “magic pill” for patient safety.
