Should pay-for-performance be the wave of the future with so little testing?

In her recent New York Times article, Pauline Chen, MD, weighs the pros and cons of pay-for-performance models. Although many new pay-for-performance programs are being embraced, Chen points out that there has been very little research done to show that they can succeed in healthcare. Theoretically these models promote better care, however, questions remain, such as what effects will pay for performance have on the relationship between doctor and patient? What new costs will pay-for-performance introduce into the healthcare system?
