Social media plays a role in quality care, even if you don't know it

If you’re the type of person that obsessively refreshes your Facebook timeline, posts real-time pictures of your latest vacation, and liberally hands out likes to all your friends, you might have a few things to teach your hospital.

A study published in the March issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine shows that hospital social media ratings may be more impactful than you might think. Using data from the CMS Hospital Compare website, researchers identified 364 hospitals that had 30-day readmission rates that were significantly lower than the national average and 315 hospitals that were significantly higher. Then they analyzed the ratings of those hospitals on Facebook’s five-star scale and found that hospitals that had lower 30-day readmission rates had higher ratings on Facebook versus hospitals with higher readmission rates.
