As the world's population of elderly people grows, so does the rate of fall-related hospital admissions, according to a study published in a recent issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Although the amount of time patients who are admitted for fall-related incidents spend in the hospital has decreased by 20%, the number of admissions increased by 60% during the course of the study, which ran from 1981 through 2008.

The researchers behind the study examined records in the National Hospital Discharge Registry in the Netherlands. The study is based on Dutch patients aged 65 and older during the years of the study.
