Survey: A little respect goes a long way

Aretha Franklin wasn’t singing “Respect” about her physician, but a new survey indicates that more patients might be crooning her famous lyrics to their caregiver.

A recent Consumer Reports survey of 1,200 patients provides interesting insight into the communication pathways between clinicians and patients, and the impact that relationship has on patient safety. According to the survey, respondents that said they “rarely received respect” from the medical staff were two-and-a-half times as likely to experience a medical error.

Although physicians are rarely outright rude, even things like body language or the use of medical jargon can create a perception for a patient. In healthcare, respect is defined as answering questions, listening to patient concerns, and in some cases, acknowledging mistakes. According to the Consumer Reports survey, one-third of respondents said clinicians interrupted them and 34% felt their wishes about their treatment were not always honored.
