Up to $500 million will be awarded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center through a solicitation and other procurements for federal contracts, CMS has announced.

“We are now looking to contract with local and statewide entities that can foster and support hospitals’ efforts to improve healthcare and reduce harm to patients,” said CMS Administrator Donald Berwick, MD in the statement. The Hospital Engagement Contractors will be large healthcare systems, associations, state organizations, and other interested parties that will work to redesign the care process.

The funding is part of CMS’ new patient safety initiative, Partnership for Patients, a new public-private partnership aiming to reduce hospital admissions by 20% and patient harm by 40% over the next three years.
